What tends to cause it
Liquid exposure
Even a brief splash can corrode power circuits over days or weeks. A phone that died some time after getting wet is still a liquid-damage case.
Drop damage
Impact can crack solder joints or dislodge components. The phone sometimes works for a while afterwards, then fails once a weakened joint lets go.
Shorted power rail
A single failed capacitor or IC can pull a power rail to ground, so the phone draws current but never boots. This is a classic board-level fault.
Charging-path failure
A failed charging IC can leave the battery flat with no way to refill it — the phone looks dead but the fault is in the charge path.

Is a dead iPhone worth repairing?
Usually the question is answered by diagnosis rather than guesswork. Many no-power faults are single-component failures that cost far less to repair than replacing the phone. The £35 diagnostic tells you the exact fault and price before you decide anything.
Is my data still on a dead iPhone?
Recovery may be possible, but an intact storage chip alone does not guarantee access. Device security, encryption, board condition and stable operation also matter. My iPhone died after an update or while charging overnight. Is that different?
The trigger helps the diagnosis but the approach is the same: bench testing to find the actual failure point. Tell us what happened just before it died when you book — it genuinely speeds up fault isolation.
