iPad Pro 12.9-inch M2 screen dim or partly dark?

The sixth-generation 12.9-inch Pro uses a mini-LED backlit display. We assess whether an abnormal dark area or loss of brightness comes from settings, the display assembly, connections or board circuitry.

Fixed diagnostic charge

The fixed £35 diagnostic covers the assessment described below and both-way UK tracked shipping. If you approve the repair quote, the fee is deducted from that quote. No repair work starts without your approval.

Local dimming is part of this display's design

This Liquid Retina XDR screen uses many backlight zones behind an LCD. Some light around a bright object against a dark background can result from that design. A new persistent dark region, flickering or a barely visible image is a different observation. Explain what appears on a normal bright screen as well as in a dark scene.

Check your model: This is the 12.9-inch, sixth-generation M2 Pro, including A2436. The 11-inch M2 and newer OLED Pro models have different display hardware.

For the wider fault pattern, read the iPad backlight diagnosis. If the files matter more than returning the device to daily use, read about data recovery and select Data recovery when booking.

Describe the area and brightness change

Useful observations include:

  • Part of the display stays dark across different apps
  • The image is faint even after checking brightness settings
  • The brightness fault appeared after impact or screen work

What we check on your iPad Pro 12.9-inch (M2).

  • Compare the reported behaviour with the display's normal local-dimming characteristics
  • Inspect the assembly and connections for physical damage
  • Assess display power and control circuits where the image fault needs board investigation

We’ll explain what we find in writing and quote for the work we can offer. Your options depend on the device’s condition, our test results and the parts available.

What to record before sending it

If the iPad is usable, note whether the fault changes with brightness, persists across ordinary screens or follows the same physical area. A photograph taken with another device can show the visible fault, but avoid including private content. A software screenshot may not record a physical brightness problem on the panel.

Protect the device and the data while deciding.

  • Check brightness and accessibility dimming settings if the screen remains usable
  • Do not flex the chassis or press the display to restore the image
  • Describe the exact screen size, generation and previous display work

A backlight symptom can lead to different repairs

An assembly fault and a board-side supply fault need different work. The assessment explains which route is supported and whether suitable parts are available. It does not promise a small component repair for every dark screen.

iPad Pro 12.9-inch (M2) dim screen / backlight FAQ

Is the M2 12.9-inch Pro an OLED iPad?

No. This model uses an LCD with mini-LED backlighting. Advice for the newer OLED Pro display does not describe the same hardware.

Does a halo around white text prove a fault?

Not by itself. Local dimming can make some light visible around bright content on a dark background. Describe any change, persistent dark area or flickering for assessment.

Can you guarantee it only needs a backlight component?

No. The display assembly, connections and board circuits must be distinguished before a repair can be quoted.
